Towngas wins three accolades at HKV-Award 2023 in recognition of its innovative volunteer projects

(4 January 2024) The Hong Kong and China Gas Company Limited (Towngas) has been recognised with three awards at the Hong Kong Volunteer Award (HKV-Award) 2023, co-organised by the Home and Youth Affairs Bureau and the Agency for Volunteer Service. The Company received the Outstanding Corporate Award, the Outstanding Collaboration Project Award, and the Corporate Award (Volunteer Hours) - Silver Award. This acknowledgement highlights the Company's ongoing commitment to organising innovative and diverse volunteer projects throughout the years.

Towngas has developed its own Smart Controller and Smart Gas Meter for gas appliances. The Smart Controller sends regular reminders to users about appliance usage and supports emergency shut-off, providing not only enjoyment for the elderly in cooking but also peace of mind for their carers. The Smart Meter features automatic meter reading functionality, eliminating the need for the elderly and persons with disabilities to take readings manually. Additionally, when the Smart Meter detects abnormal gas usage, it automatically cuts off the gas supply and promptly notifies Towngas for immediate inspection, significantly enhancing home safety for users. Towngas’ dedication to supporting individuals in need through innovative technology has been recognised, leading to the award of the Outstanding Corporate Award by the HKV-Award organisers.

Towngas was also honoured with the Outstanding Collaboration Project Award, recognising the Company’s close collaboration with various social welfare organisations and its significant contribution to enhancing community life. In 2022, Towngas partnered again with the Hong Kong Sheng Kung Hui Welfare Council to launch the Chef Anchor 2.0 programme. This innovative initiative combines cooking with elements of occupational therapy by integrating procedural learning into recipes. It enables seniors with mild cognitive impairments to engage in cognitive training while cooking. A report published by the CUHK Jockey Club Institute of Ageing revealed that more than 50% of the participants and carers involved in the Chef Anchor 2.0 programme had their Overall Physical and Mental Health Index (measuring their life satisfaction, wellbeing, self-rated health, and meaningfulness of life) improved.

Towngas has always encouraged its employees to engage in volunteer work. As early as the 1970s, the staff of the Company voluntarily organised numerous charitable activities. In 1999, the Towngas Volunteer Service Team was established, and since then, it has accumulated a remarkable total of over one million service hours, benefiting more than 7.94 million individuals. Towngas’ commitment to volunteer work has remained unwavering. Even during the epidemic, it introduced a series of initiatives, including the Love on Delivery programme, the Unemployment Support Programme, the Dining Coupon Scheme, and a donation of HK$3 million worth of anti-epidemic supplies. These measures have provided timely help to those in need within the community.

Towngas is committed to providing ongoing support to various communities through innovative and diverse volunteer services, creating shared value and utilising smart solutions to pave the way towards a brighter future for everyone.
